Here’s a tip for saving money when flying

Some people who don’t travel much get confused on how to find affordable flights, but really the secrets to cheap airfare aren’t too mysterious. One tip is to start by determining what the baseline fare is for the route you’ll be flying. Virtually all flights start by offering their seats for the same low price, and as these seats slowly get booked up, the price of the remaining seats will go up. So part of the trick is figuring out the absolute minimum price for that flight at any time in the future, so you’ll know where you stand when you start looking at prices of flights that will work for you.

Once you know the baseline price you’ll instantly be able to tell if the airfare you are seeing is a good deal or not. If, say, flights from Los Angeles to Honolulu cost $499 as a base price, and you see a fare on a site for $519, you know that’s a darn good deal and worth getting. But if you saw that price without knowing how it compares to normal fares you have no idea if it’s cheap or not. So the best thing to do is start at a search engine like Kayak.com and you’ll be able to quickly see where prices begin, and the rest should be fairly easy.
